I recently invested in the Boon Glo nightlight for my son’s third birthday. I saw it in a store several months back, but hadn’t taken the leap. Since he adores balls and all my kids fight over night lights, I decided to try it out. It didn’t hurt that Glo comes with three balls, and I happen to have three kids.

Each ball can come out of its stalk. Once removed, if the light has been turned on, the balls glow (in regular glow in the dark color, not the color of the light) for about thirty minutes, which works great for kids that need an extra light while they fall asleep. They can snuggle the hard ball or even tuck it under the covers to dispel any vestiges of darkness lurking about.

The main base plugs in, so you don’t have to worry about it running out of batteries overnight. (With younger kids, obviously make sure to keep cords out of reach due to strangulation risks.) Each ball fits snugly in one stem for charging and storage. Both the base and the balls remain totally cool to the touch, despite the bright light emitted.

To my delight, we still have all three balls almost a month into ownership. My youngest regularly takes them out, but their racquet ball size means I’ve found them all hiding under stuffed animals or other lovies within a couple minutes.

The nightlight itself can be adjusted to any of the colors along its rainbow spectrum by sliding the switch at the bottom of the base. The switch hides at the bottom of the base, and if you don’t want your kids messing with it or knowing how to switch colors (no harm in avoiding sibling squabbles), you could do it on the sly even while they watched. If you slide it all the way to the opposite end of the track, the light cycles through all the colors repeatedly.

My kids love the different colors and argue over their favorites, but it always ends up on blue because my youngest is the only one who can reach it once in bed and it technically (as anyone who has more than one kid knows matters) belongs to him.

The lights gave off so much light, though, that I taped a small piece of white paper inside each ball holder. The balls might not glow quite as long, but as least I can sleep down the hall without feeling like it’s daytime. I have no other complaints so far, and like all Boon products, I love everything else about it.

For young infants, it provides a great light source bright enough to see anything in the room without the glare of overhead lights. For older kids, it helps with fears of the dark or resistance to bedtime.
