We’ve been through the getting a new sibling transition twice, and I love What Shall We Do With the Boo Hoo Baby? by Cressida Cowell for older siblings. Rather than a traditional approach to expanding your family, this sweet book offers a cute look at what to expect from new babies, namely mostly crying. It also empowers older siblings to make suggestions for what the new baby might need, allowing them to participate in the process of caring for a newborn. Toddlers find the cartoon animals appealing, and giggle with delight at their antics as they try to soothe an infant who just can’t be quieted.

We get presents “from the baby” for their older siblings each time we add a new member to our family, and I include this book in my list of gifts. I try to stockpile enough little things for the first couple of days, to help ease the transition from all of my time and attention to much less of it (not least because I’m sleeping off the effects of delivery).
