  • Why: Durable and easy to use
  • Where: Amazon or Bummis

If you can’t get a stash of Thirsties, try Bummis cloth diaper covers. I originally used Bummis before discovering the awesomeness of Thirsties. But I had to wait for Thirsties to pop up for sale secondhand because at the time no local stores carried them, nor did Amazon. In the meantime, I had to use use something since I didn’t relish the idea of catching my kid’s pee and poop. I invested in Bummis covers brand new because local shops sold them, and I bought more because they worked. (Full disclosure: I bought at least one of every kind of diaper cover our local stores sold, because I had no idea and what I had wasn’t working well. Turns out that my cloth diaper inserts sucked, not my covers, but I didn’t know that at the time.)

I preferred the hook and loop (aka Velcro) closures rather than snaps, but Bummis offer both depending on the style you select. Several styles also feature the double gusset leg openings I have come to love and appreciate. The Bummis Super Brite has the double gusset leg elastic. Bummis Super Whisper Wrap does not, so I bought more of the Super Brite variety once I learned my lesson on that.

One of my Bummis Super Brite diaper covers. You can see the extra bit of patterned fabric peeking out on the inner left side. That’s the second leg gusset.

All Bummis come in super cute patterns that I love. The colors never faded even after multiple washings, though I did line dry except for when the occasional cover snuck into the dryer. My kids didn’t run around in the sun wearing nothing but cloth diapers either, so the wraps didn’t get sun exposure, which I suppose could cause fading.

They have extra aplix (aka Velcro) tabs on the inside of the cover to hold the fasteners during a laundry cycle, too. That Velcro never seemed to lose its hold, but I didn’t use it every day or more either. The moisture resistant inside surface of the cover wiped clean super easily, so I rarely had to put my wraps in the wash, unless the more absorbent leg or waist elastics got soiled.

They also made something called a Polar Bummi briefly. Made from soft flannel, it weighed a bit more but was super soft and cozy. I had one of those that we loved, and it also offered the double leg gusset. They no longer manufacture that style, but if you happen to come across one secondhand, they work well, though they don’t wipe clean. I threw mine in the diaper pail anytime it came in contact with pee or poop since it didn’t resist moisture.

The soft side of the Velcro along the waistband lost its grip after 2.5 kids. Somewhere during our third round of cloth diapering, they stopped staying fastened well. I can think of several quick solutions, like sewing on another round of Velcro on top, or using Snappis for a quick fix. But given how much we used them, and how long they lasted, I think they provide great value.
