Easy Crafts for Kids That Don’t Require Buying Any Kits

  • What: Easy Kid Crafts
  • When: 2 years and up
  • Why: Fun, creative, inexpensive
  • Where: At home

Looking for an easy craft project that doesn’t require a fancy kit, special ingredients, or complex instructions? Want to keep your kid entertained without resorting to screens or electronic devices? If you want affordable ideas for kids’ craft projects, these inspiring ideas only require basic art supplies most households already have on hand.

Circle art project painted with end of toilet paper tube

Toilet Tube Stamp Art: Turn those empty rolls into individual art pieces. Use the end of the empty toilet paper roll to dip into paint or ink pads and let kids add color. All you need are empty tubes, paint or ink, and some small containers as well as paper.

Marbles in cake tin with paper on bottom painted by rolling balls around

Paint By Marble: This easy project also uses paint in new ways. You’ll need some marbles, paint, paper, and a pan or dish with high sides. Small containers for different colors of paint also help. Then let kids coat the marble in paint, and place it inside the dish with a paper lining. Roll the marble to create some stunning works of art. If your paper doesn’t fit your container exactly, you can trim it to size.

God's eye weavings yarn webs in orange and yellow crafted by seven year old kid

Yarn Webs: If you have leftover yarn or string from previous knitting projects, this craft puts those supplies to good use. Let kids gather sticks to form the basis of the web. Then they can weave the web by going over and under the sticks in a pattern. Kids may need help getting started, but can complete the rest of the project on their own to make these beautiful woven webs.

Child's paint project made by blowing air through straw to move paint on paper

Straw Painting: This simple art project requires only three supplies: paint, paper, and a straw. Put paint that moves freely into small dabs directly on the paper. Then let kids blow air through the straw to move the paint around the paper. Use one color to explore how blowing harder and softer affects the painting, or add more colors for extra interest.

Snake kid craft project paper plate painted

Snake Paper Plate: Turn leftover paper plates from your last event into works of art. Kids can paint, color, or otherwise decorate a paper plate any way they’d like. Once they finish adding the glam, let them cut in a spiral to create a one-of-a-kind dangling snake.

Paint By Car: This project works similarly to painting by marble, but adds another fun element with the car. Take any toy car (Hot Wheels work well) and roll it through a shallow container of paint. Then let kids drive over the paper to make fun tracks and patterns. Experiment with different colors and different cars for more artistic patterns.
