What To Do With Leftover Pumpkins

- What: What to Do With Leftover Pumpkins
- When: After the holidays
- Why: Avoid landfills, bring delight
- Where: Local farms near you
Are your jack o’lanterns still in residence a week past Halloween? Like our family, maybe you want to get maximum enjoyment out of your brightly colored gourds. But if you’ve ever had to shovel pumpkin guts off your sidewalk or porch, you know the importance of parting with your pumpkins before they become a slimy mess. But did you know you can do something besides tossing them in the trash or compost heap?

If you want to give your pumpkins to a good cause, look locally. Many farms and animal rescues happily accept pumpkins to give their animals a fall treat. Some places even allow kids to deliver the treats and watch the animals feast on these goodies. Ballydidean Farm in Clinton, WA loves treating their animals to these festive snacks. Other rescues will also accept uncarved and unpainted pumpkins for their animals. Check out this map, courtesy of Pumpkins for Pigs, to find a place near you.
Give your pumpkin decor to an organization who can put them to good use long after the holiday season and let your kids learn about the joys of donating to a good cause.
