Looking for a series to get your middle school student interested in reading? Perhaps you want a book about a hero who overcomes stereotypes like size. If so, introduce your older readers to The Ranger’s Apprentice, by John Flanagan.

The Ruins of Gorlan book on Amazon
Kick it off with the first book in the series, The Ruins of Gorlan. This book introduces the main character, fifteen year old Will, an orphan in the Kingdom of Araluen. He has reached the age of apprenticeship, and hopes to become a knight. Instead, he gets chosen to train as a Ranger, an elite special force that protects the kingdom on the brink of attack. Can Will survive the grueling trials of apprenticeship and earn his bronze oakleaf? This boo will leave kids wanting to read all the remaining books in the twelve book series.

My son received a set of twelve Rangers Apprentice books for the holidays. He finished them all (multiple times) within a week, because he couldn’t bear to put them down. Each book in the series chronicles the adventures of Will and his companions, with plenty of action and amusement.
