Kayak: This small sit on top kayak from Lifetime works great for kids. Made for children, it holds up to 130 pounds. It offers several foot rests at different lengths to keep them comfortable while they sit. And the low back deck lets kids get back in the kayak from the water with less effort, making it perfect for splashing around in the water then getting back to paddling.

Paddle: Speaking of paddles, getting one the right length for your child makes a big difference. If you buy a kayak new, it may come with a paddle. But if you prefer secondhand or boats passed down from friends and family, you may need to get a paddle separately. Choose one that reaches roughly one paddle portion above their head height when stood on its end.

Life Jacket: No kid should be out on the water without the proper safety equipment. Make sure their life jacket fits them properly. Check the label on the inside for the weight range. Once they buckle up, give the jacket a tug upwards to make sure it won’t slip off in the water.

Whistle: Attach a simple whistle to your child’s life jacket for extra security. If for some reason they float away from you or you get separated on the water, a whistle provides much more sound with less effort than yelling. Keep it handy (not inside a pocket or under their life vest) so it doesn’t float away in the water and can be reached at any time.

Now choose your snacks and refreshments (and be sure to put them in waterproof sealed containers) and get ready for your next adventure together.
