Get Kids Clean Without Getting Irritated

- What: Super Sensitive Shampoo and Body Wash by California Baby
- When: Birth until they can pick their own
- Why: Super safe even for sensitive skin
- Where: Amazon
All three of my kids had sensitive skin as babies. Bathing them only made it worse (so we don’t bathe them as often as some people might prefer). Our pediatrician said, “Why would he need a bath? What’s he doing to get dirty?” and I became a firm believer in occasional bathtime. But with the urp and poop and gunk that collects under their neck folds and behind their ears, I have to bathe them sometime.
When I do, I use California Baby Super Sensitive Shampoo and Body Wash
. It took me some time to find a cleanser that worked for us, because I’m obsessed with EWG’s ranking system and wanted a safe rating. Then I learned that fragrance often causes most skin reactions. Since my kids didn’t have skin issues outside of the tub, eliminating fragrance removed almost all of our problems. (Hello cradle cap!) We use it as both a shampoo and body wash, and it’s gentle on eyes to boot.
It comes in two sizes, 8.5 and 19 ounces. We don’t need much to wash three kids (less than a quarter sized amount, though we do frequently – as much as I can use the word frequently and bathe in the same sentence regarding our household – bathe all three together), so the regular-sized bottle lasts us six months or more. Keep in mind we don’t bathe once a day. My kids like to hang out in the tub for at least thirty minutes and I don’t have time for that every weeknight. (Don’t worry. They get showers, too. Those turn into baths, which last at least an hour.)

I’ve used this shampoo with my kids for over six years and have zero complaints. It doesn’t cost an arm and a leg, I can order it on Amazon, and like all of California Baby’s Super Sensitive line of products, it gets a very reassuring green ranking of 1 (the lowest and therefore safest ranking) from the cosmetics database.
