Got a kid who loves crafts, or just need a new idea to keep your kids entertained indoors or on the go? Give scratch art a whirl.
If you’re not familiar with scratch art, this type of project comes with black paper and a wooden pencil. Kids use the stylus to remove the black coating and reveal the bright colors or patterns hidden underneath. You can find lots of different kits if your kid falls in love with this kind of art.

We love this doodle notebook, which comes with 60 pages of three different types. The book includes three pages of punch out shapes designed to use as stencils. Some pages have outlines for objects like butterflies and buildings, and kids scratch off the coating to decorate them by revealing either a rainbow or sparkly foil underneath. Other pages offer blank sketching space, so kids can make whatever they want with regular art materials like crayons, colored pencils, or markers. The illustrated pages show examples of what can be done for inspiration and ideas on the scratch art pages. In a pinch, kids can also color these black and white pages in with regular materials as well. No matter what type of page your kids chooses, they can produce one of a kind art.

My kids like to removed all the black to reveal a rainbow of colors. That takes even longer than the basic pattern making, so it works well as a quiet activity for travel or while younger siblings nap.
