With school cancelled indefinitely, we’ve been struggling to come up with enough reading material for our eldest child, now nine. I’ve worked half an hour into our home school schedule, and I still can’t keep up with his book consumption. Enter The Secrets of Droon by Tony Abbott.

We normally check books out at the library, but that option is closed to us now as well. We’ve been raiding little free libraries, which are fortunately plentiful in our neighborhood. But I was pleased to discover a new series of chapter books he loves.

The Secrets of Droon follows Eric, Neal, and Julie down an enchanted staircase, which leads to the magical world of Droon. There, the trio never has trouble finding adventure. You can start with the first book, The Hidden Stairs and the Magic Carpet, though we’ve been reading them in any order we can get our hands on copies.  The longer chapters and minimal illustrations work great for keeping my son’s attention.

My son loves reading these magical books.

You can buy individual books, but if you need more reading material as much as we do during this time, go for the box sets. You can get a set of four, eight, twelve, 27, or even 36 titles. With 44 books to choose from, it can keep young readers occupied for quite some time, especially if you can mange (unlike us) to parcel them out economically. You can also find many of the titles at libraries online, though I’ve been resisting switching to an e-reader.
