  • What: Bad Kitty Books
  • When: 6 to 10 years
  • Why: Funny, easy reads
  • Where: Amazon

My kids have discovered the Bad Kitty series of books by Nick Bruel. All three of them love the tales of this adventurous feline and his escapades.

These illustrated novels include plenty of humor for kids and adults alike. Bad Kitty gets into trouble wherever he goes, no matter what he does. This cat, paired with the aptly named Puppy, finds plenty of trouble. The first book features an emphasis on the alphabet, as Kitty learns her favorite foods have run out. She goes on a riot of bad behavior to protest the food shortage, only to be appeased by more tasty alphabetical food choices. Further books include attempts that all cat owners can relate to, from giving the cat a bath to visits to the vet and more.

The pages include lots of illustrations and larger text.

Each book has around nine chapters of fun reading, with large text and illustrations on every page. You can buy books individually, or you can get a boxed set with either three or seven books and not worry about which books your kids already own. In each book, Uncle Murray chimes in regularly with pages packed full of fun facts in smaller texts, to get kids ready to move to the next level of chapter books. Whether you read these out loud together or your kids enjoy them on their own, you can’t go wrong with this series.
