I know I’ve raved about boogie boards before,  but these marvelous affordable water toys deserve some more love. It’s been three years since we scored some boogie boards for less than $2 at our local drug store, and all three of my kids still love them.

Unlike pool floats, boogie boards, also known as bodyboards, don’t need inflating. They can handle all sorts of rough surfaces, from uneven pavement at the urban wading pool to the barnacles at the beach, with zero chance of sprouting a hole. Even if the outer material wears off, the styrofoam base still floats. The wrist leash means if the board floats off, your child can retrieve it with a tug of the cord. You can get boards in a variety of lengths, from 16 to 48 inches, with 32 and 40 inches most common.

These boards float even in shallow water.

We unearthed all five of ours for a recent trip to the beach, and every kid there wanted a chance to try them. They work great as floats, though my kids preferred two boards for extra buoyancy. They need hardly any water to float, and don’t bend when kids step or sit on them. They work great as a seat on the beach, and can even double as fort walls in a pinch. You can even buy them in pairs on Amazon. I suspect we won’t be leaving home without ours for several months to come.

Boogie boards can double as seats, and handle rough terrain with ease.

If you want a sturdy durable water toy that your kids can enjoy for years to come in a variety of places, get your own boogie board.
