This toy xylophone comes with eight brightly colored metal pieces attached in ascending note order. Each one includes the note engraved in the metal, so you don’t have to worry about stickers coming off or the markings fading over the years. The end includes a rounded side which doubles as a handle, so kids can pick up the toy and move it around. A bright yellow plastic mallet attaches on the back, making it easy to keep with the xylophone. The plastic mallet works great for little hands and produces a sharp tinny sound, with distinct differences between notes. But the plastic mallet won’t hurt your furniture (or you!) if they expand their banging to other items.

This sturdy xylophone features bright colors.

We got this as a gift for our son on his first birthday, when we racked our brains trying to come up with something he would like but also that seemed fitting for such a momentous occasion. Ten years later, our kids still use it when they want to make music. As infants and toddlers, they enjoyed the different noises they could create. Now, they like to pick out their favorite tune or make up their own. While the plastic mallet isn’t as straight as it once was, overall the toy has held up remarkably well.

The included plastic mallet stores neatly on the underside of the xylophone.

If you’d like a gift that makes noise without annoying parents and will continue to enchant kids for months if not years to come, check out the Hohner Kids Glockenspiel.
