Each day we will highlight one item we used extensively during our trip, from entertainment to necessities like food and water. Our three kids, at ages 11, 9, and 7, now pack their own travel entertainment bags and their clothes as well. Some items, therefore, were chosen entirely by the kids, while some we packed to make our lives easier.
On our recent big adventure abroad, our youngest child packed our collection of chalkboard crayons and multiple smaller chalkboard mats to entertain himself. He chose these items all on his own, including carefully cleaning each tiny placement to make sure it was ready for entertainment.

While we didn’t lean on these chalkboard crayons anywhere near as much as on our road trip to Yellowstone last summer (mainly because both the long flights had seatback entertainment), he did whip them out in the airport to keep himself entertained.
We also still use a travel soap dish to keep all the crayons together and in one piece. It works as great as always, and he had no trouble finding the crayons en route. Since we also had several long drives, around three hours in the car one way, he packed them for those smaller trips as well. The blank areas of the smaller mats work great for open ended drawing, while the scenes make for great coloring. The printed games provide even more choices for activities when kids get antsy.

Since they wipe clean with a wet cloth, they can be used over and over again on the same trip, without adding a lot of bulk to travel bags. If you want some on the go entertainment that goes the distance in the air or on the road, grab some chalkboard crayons and travel mats and let your child loose.
