The original Captain Underpants tells the tales of two fourth grade boys, George Beard and Harold Hutchins, who love to create their own comic books. But they hate their school principal, Mr. Krupp. By hypnotizing him, they turn him into a cape-wearing hero sporting oversized underwear. A splash of water changes him back from barely clad superhero to evil principle.

Full disclosure. I’m not a fan of potty humor, so I don’t love these books. But all three of my kids, two boys and a girl, think they are hilarious. They will read them over and over. If your kids already know all these words, like potty and poopy, they will adore how these two elementary students encounter gross situations and beat back bad guys with unusual tools and tricks. If your kids don’t know the language, they won’t find the humor and you’re better off waiting until they get older (or skipping them altogether).

But once your kids discover these books, there’s no turning back. With 12 books in the series, you can get all of them in full color, instead of the original black and white illustrations. Or buy a ten pack of these colorful books. Each one has around 150 pages loaded with images of exploding toilets, mechanical monsters, and of course, loads of super-powered underwear. Kids can enjoy them in sequence or read them in any order. Since I don’t like to spend money on this type of book (my kids finish one in a matter of minutes), we check them out of our local library.

If you want some easy reading material for your older elementary child, kids love these books served up with a side of potty talk at its finest.
